Dear Lorraine,

A recession is like the uphill stages of a marathon race - it's the hardest part and where the lead changes hands. Where are you in your race for success?

This month I'm sharing hints and ideas on how to manage successfully during a recession, what to do about your online image, and boomer perspectives from the new White House administration.

Now - - - please feel free to forward this newsletter to your family and friends - - Bloom On and I'll "see" you in the New Year!

 Managing effectively during a recession

According to Fortune Magazine, "When this recession ends, when the road levels off and the world seems full of promise once more, your position in the competitive pack will depend on how skillfully you manage right now."

You could say this is where true grit is needed most in viewing challenging times as times of opportunity.  Businesses around the nation are finding themselves going against their natural instincts in order to weather this storm towards a positive outcome.

Today your online reputation is as important as your reputation in "real" life.

More and more people are looking to the internet for information on prospective employers, employees, colleagues, business partners, etc.  Additionally, if your customer base consists of early adopters, social networking can be an effective strategy for interacting with existing customers and developing new customers.  One social network technology becoming a popular forum for exchanging ideas, opinions, and criticism is the blog.

The more relevant your online content (posts) is, the more credibility you will build with your audience. If you're exploring the world of blogging, some of the best advice I've heard on the topic comes from well-known entrepreneur Guy Kawasaki.  He says you only need to do one thing and that is, "write good shitake".  As for me, when it comes to your business I would add one more thing - - "keep it clean!"

Bye bye Boomers?
White House

From the Associated Press (AP):

"To a number of social analysts, historians, bloggers and ordinary Americans, Jan. 20 will symbolize the passing of an entire generation: the baby boomer years.

Generational change. A passing of the torch. The terms have been thrown around with frequency as the moment nears for Obama to take the oath of office. And yet the reference is not to Obama's relatively young age - at 47, he's only tied for fifth place on the youngest presidents list with Grover Cleveland."  Read the whole story here. . .

I totally get the concept of today's recession being the uphill section of the last few miles in a marathon race - - this is where I'm at my best.  That last surge, the "where does it all come from" place in your gut, the will to get through.

But, I'm not interested in beating the system, the economics, or the competition.  Rather, I'm doing my best to work with the system in identifying the next place I'm supposed to be with my purpose.  The thrill for me is in taking the risk to innovate by continuing to put myself "out there".  Besides, I've always been at my best when off the beaten path - it's where you meet the most interesting people.

Off and running!
