Reinventing Your Career or Business

Leveraging Innovation
La Grande Jatte

In 1884, French artist Georges Seurat broke from tradition and developed an innovative technique called "pointillism". Taking something as simple as a "dot" of paint, he transformed countless numbers of them into a magnificent painting called "A Sunday on La Grande Jatte".

Today, new times continue to require new techniques. Being innovative in your career and business has more to do with your ability to embrace change than your ability to adapt a particular technology. It's about creativity and risk . . .

Boomer 4-1-1

Driving the Green Scene
Green Scene

Baby Boomers have influenced every automotive trend since the 1970's. Remember giving up gas guzzling muscle cars for small, economical, high-mpg Japanese models? How about trading in those station wagons for soccer-kid-toting mini-vans in the 1980's? And, as our careers grew throughout the 1990's, we started buying large sport utility vehicles and large foreign luxury cars to reflect our wealth.

Today, boomers are continuing to influence economic trends in a major way. The latest could be in the direction of more and more eco-friendly vehicles in response to global warming. It doesn't matter what side of the fence you're on, the point is boomers continue to flex their buying muscles and auto manufacturers are taking notice. And if anyone is going to make a statement it will be the boomers - - driving green all the way.

Did You Know?

Even Recruiting Advisors Have a Retention Problem
New Wave Consultant

Workforce Management reported that consulting firms who advise companies on recruiting and retention are struggling to keep their best and brightest.

A recent survey of 700 consultants by Top-Consultant.com reveals an annual turnover and attrition of 15%-20% in the U.S., while those in Europe are losing 10%-15% of their consulting professionals.

Why? Pay, quality of work, and work/life balance are the top three factors.

From Jet Set to Desk Set - Then . . . and Now!

We're Nothing Without the Details
Desk Set

My brother, CCMSgt Rob Lee III (The 154th Wing at Wheeler AAF in Hawaii) has inspired this month's Then and Now topic. His wing recently underwent its annual Unit Compliance Inspection that reflected his team's ability to "pay attention to the details". He is so right - - it's all in the details.

One of the most challenging aspects in effective leadership is the ability to "see" the details while keeping an eye on the "big picture". As a former corporate leader, I still find this particular ability to be one of the most exciting and challenging skills to maintain. Maybe that's why my favorite painting has been "Sunday in the Park" (A Sunday on La Grande Jatte - 1884) by French Artist Georges Seurat.

I was first introduced to the painting in an art class at CSUS in 1988. Then, I saw the painting during a visit to the Art Institute of Chicago in 1998. The painting is large (81 x 121 inches) and was completed using the technique Seurat developed called "pointillism". The entire painting is created with the use of pointillist brushmarks. You don't realize they are points of paint until you step close to the canvas. It's absolutely amazing to watch the picture come into focus as you step further and further back.

The thing is - Seurat was able to paint simple dots of color while maintaining the "big picture" end result in his mind. His ability to maintain a dual perspective is similar to what effective leaders do.

We are nothing without the details. Teams need to know what they do is important and that it has a positive effect on the organization. My brother has given his team that message, and by his own act has proven it to be true. :) LLR
