Dear Lorraine,

In this month's issue, we'll talk about transition, "big fish", and Prime Time Marketing.  I'll also introduce you to my cool friend, Colleen Moore who is an expert in helping people create fundamental and permanent change.

More importantly, this month we join with others in honoring men and women who have died in military service.  A national moment of remembrance takes place on Memorial Day, May 26 at 3pm (EST).

Thanks for your feedback and for taking the time to focus and tune in for your monthly reality check.  Now - - - Bloom on!
reinventing your career or business
Looking to Change4 Biggest Mistakes People In Transition Make
  1. Use the words "change" and "transition" interchangeably.
Reality: A change is situational; the revisions to a hiring policy, the reorganization of a department after a merger, the move of a medical office to a new location.  Transition, on the other hand, is psychological, it is a three-phase process (Ending, Neutral-Zone, New Beginning) people go through as they internalize and come to terms with the details of the new situation that the change brings about.

  2. Expect the rest of the world to adapt to their needs.
Reality: Today's highly competitive job market means you will have to be very, very, flexible.  You will have to be open to learn new things and probably do "old" things in a new way.

  3. Take a break during a transition.
Reality:  A successful transition relies on momentum and constant forward motion.  Taking a break mid-stream could potentially side-line you with little chance of getting back in the game without losing ground.  If you run out of steam during a transition, find a way to augment your time with "fun and play" while staying on course.

  4. Try to reinvent the past.
Reality: A transition begins with an ending, a letting go of old ways and old identities.  Once you understand that transition begins with letting go of something, you have taken the first step in the task of transition management.

Small FishNever worry about being a small fish in a big pond!
Being a big fish in a small pond "bites" - - particularly if you're looking to advance on what you can achieve quickly.  You'll hit the ceiling and no one will care.

Where you want to be is in the most dynamic pond you can find - - one where you can optimize results because you'll be where the great opportunities can be found!

Prime Time Marketing!
Here are just a few Boomer facts (from Thornhill and Martin's book Boomer Consumer) worth noting:
bulletEvery day, 10,000 more Boomers turn 50 years old.
bulletOne out of every three adults over 21 in the country is a Baby Boomer.
bullet37% of the Boomer parents are also grandparents.  Half of all grandparents alive today are Boomers.
If you want to learn more about the Ten New Rules for Marketing to America's Largest, Wealthiest and Most Influential Group, then read the book called Boomer Consumer by Matt Thornhill and John Martin (Founders of the Boomer Project).  I'll be adding a link to this book on my FAB Stuff page within the next month, but for now you can find it via Matt and John's website.

 Desk SetMemorial Day
My cousin Richard Jacobs is buried at Punchbowl Cemetery in Honolulu Hawaii.  He died in combat just five months after arriving in Vietnam.  The year was 1966 and he was only 23 years old.

As a kid growing up in Hawaii, I remember my Mom and Dad taking me and my brothers to Punchbowl every Memorial Day to visit Richard's grave.  My mom would carefully drape red flowers around his gravestone.  That seems like a lifetime ago.  Today, whenever I'm in the islands, I make a point to place flowers at his grave site.  And, whenever I'm in Washington D.C., I manage to visit the Vietnam War Memorial, searching out his name etched in the black marble wall.  There's something comforting about running my fingers across his name - - but then, there are so many other names - - too many names.

I never met my cousin, never knew him.  I was only 10 when he died; yet I can't seem to shake the feeling that we would have been very close had he lived.  I can only honor him as a soldier, a cousin, a man I will never know.
