Dear Lorraine,
I've been on a
Pecha Kucha frenzy lately having just created my fifth
20x20 presentation called "Found in Transition" that I hope to
present later this fall to a corporation in the bay area. For
those not familiar with the Pecha Kucha, it's a method of
presenting your ideas with the use of 20 images each displayed
for 20 seconds making the total length of your presentation
only 6 minutes and 40 seconds. Pretty cool, huh?
You could say I've "fallen" for a more creative alternative to
the standard corporate presentation. Check out my side bar to
view the Pecha Kucha called Authentic Leadership (originally
created for the US Air Force).
I'll share a couple of other "alternatives" this month - in
the form of careers and social networks. Thanks for your
feedback and for taking the time to focus and tune in for your
monthly reality check. Now - - - Bloom on!

Ready
to explore the Clean Energy Technology (CET) Job Field?
A panel of experts and companies at the
CleanStart Showcase in Sacramento last month provided
insights on how they have successfully located, attracted, and
validated talent crucial to growing companies in the
clean-energy arena.
Each of the experts and companies were successful in the
recent hiring of resources in the Clean Energy Technology (CET)
field. With regards to skills in CET candidates, these
experts are looking for flexible and adaptable people who have
an ability to learn and grow. The president of a local power
systems high tech company also added "enthusiasm and energy
level" as important indicators. These hiring decision makers
are asking themselves "How hard a worker is this person? Will
they work 10-12 hour days?"
Some companies strictly require candidates to possess
Electrical Engineering (EE), Mechanical Engineering (ME),
Science, or Business degrees. Other companies don't
necessarily require EE or ME degrees because they are willing
to train in the technical details.
An additional point to consider is this - - although heavily
science and technology based, CET also requires senior
leadership and management experience. Crossing over to this
industry is doable - but you will need a clearly defined value
proposition to be taken seriously as a candidate of choice.
No doubt many more of us will be working longer than we
thought - - the CET job field could be where we blaze new
career trails for ourselves.

When is it okay to brush someone off?
I recently attended a local event with over 400 other people.
I ran into quite a few people I knew, some of whom I had
recently seen, others I had not seen in a very long time, and
many I met for the first time.

Are you ready to be a twit(ter)?
I just
joined
twitter.com, a service for people to stay connected and
exchange real-time answers to the question "what are you
doing?" The posted answers, called "tweets", are actually
"mini-blogs" up to 140 characters in length.
Why
would I join yet another (my third) network? Because I want
to continually improve my ability to communicate and stay
connected. The only way for me to learn about these new
methods is to actually "do it". But I wouldn't recommend
anyone join more than 2-3 of these networks because they
require your attention to stay current. You're only as good
as your last posted update.
Virtual social networks are literally everywhere -
corporations (like BearingPoint) are beginning to see the
value in building their own internal social networks for
business development and recruiting. For me, the value goes
beyond expanding my market reach - networks like twitter allow
me to meet and connect real-time with individuals who would
typically be out of my realm. My opportunity to learn from
others has increased dramatically - hopefully the same can be
said of others learning from me as well.

What's
your story?
Everyone has a story to tell - - I was recently reminded of
how important it is to believe in your own story.
People
always ask me for advice on their resumes - they wonder if
they should delete certain accomplishments or skills to dumb
it down in order to not appear over-qualified, not list
volunteer work or special interests in order to maintain
corporate appeal, etc.
My
best advice - it's your story, you need to believe it before
anyone else will. If you're proud of your story, you'll tell
it with confidence, passion, and integrity. And when you do
that, you're being authentic and real!
Best/Lorraine.
